Why are Soffit / Fascia and Eavestroughs an important part of your roofing system?
Eavestroughs are an integral part of a proper roofing system as they are the narrow channel which collects and diverts rainwater shed off the roof. Its main purpose is to protect a building’s foundation by channeling water away from its base. They help to reduce erosion, prevent leaks in basements and crawlspaces, protect painted surfaces by reducing exposure to water, and can provide a means to collect rainwater for later use.
Â
At M&M Roofing and Exteriors we can supply you with seamless continuous eavestroughs, no matter what length your roof is. We can also install or reinstall in some cases downspouts, we repair existing eavestroughs and clean them out when they get clogged by leaves and debris or place leaf guards to eliminate future leaf infiltration of your eavestroughs.
Â
Aside from eavestroughs an additional recommendation is to include drip edge on all your eavestrough/roofing work. Drip edge is a metal flange that is installed under the first row of shingles, preferably under a shingle underlayment ex. Ice and Water shield (Ice and Water shield is a water proof membrane that roofing companies should install before shingling because it helps prevent water leakage in the event of an ice dam). Drip edge serves a few different purposes. It provides some support to the shingles so that it does not curl down over the years and cause cracking of the shingles. It also acts as a barrier eliminating the small gap between your fascia and eavestrough. This barrier will not allow water to run down behind the eavestrough which eventually can rot your wooden fascia and run down the side of your house. This overlap can also protect your roof from any driving rain or animals from seeing an opening which they will chew at until they are into your attic.
Â
Soffits are an important part to a proper roofing system as they act as the means of air entering your attic space which is used to push the trapped air in your attic through your vents. Equal intake and exhaust vents are necessary to prolong lifespan of your roof. Soffits are what lie under your roof rafters on the homes overhang, perpendicular to your eavestroughs and fascia. We supply aluminum soffits which are maintenance free and available in various colors. Another advantage of installing aluminum soffits is to eliminate the easibility for animals to enter your attic.
Â
Fascia is essentially what holds up eavestroughs and soffits and is what caps rafters. M&M Roofing and Exteriors can remove existing rotten fascia and reinstall new fascia wood or preferably to place aluminum over the wood. The advantage of having aluminum fascia is that it will now be maintenance free, meaning no more painting and it helps protect the wood fascia from natures elements.
